Notes from the President's Roundtable Meeting of Monday, January 9, 2012
The regular 2nd Monday's dual District "President's Roundtable" meeting (a Sertoma PAC meeting) was held at the Perkins Restaurant on Colorado Blvd. District Governors Denny Fennell and Norm Borchers co-chaired this meeting. Highlights of the meeting include:
* District Treasurer's: Central Colorado (Maggie Anderson) district balance = $506.46 Front Range (Mike Camelio) district balance = $3,646.84
* Central Colorado Governor, Norm Borchers, received the January 1, 2012, Sertoma Membership Report for the first 6 months of our 2011/2012 year. Note: This report does not include the new Southglenn Front Range Club to be chartered as of Jan 1, 2012. Central Colorado District was down by 6 members (-4.29%) with Platte Canyon (at +1) as the only one of eight clubs to show a membership increase. Two of the eight experienced a decrease. Front Range District is down by 19 members (-11.05%). Not one of the seven clubs had an increase and five of seven had a decrease. Our Mountain West Region's membership fell from 1,587 to 1,543, a decrease of 44 members (-2.77%).
* Front Range Governor, Denny Fennell asked John Smart to report on Littleton's Jerry Wheeler who had foot surgery for an infection, is still in the hospital but is expected to go home soon and is recovering nicely. Denny/Mike Camelio have plans to spend some of the Front Range district funds on Freedom Week expenses, Soap Box Derby expenses and new club development expenses. Marie Callender's Restaurant has closed as of December 25, 2011. This was the meeting place of Sertoma Clubs: Dry Creek, Littleton, and Platte Canyon. All three clubs have identified one or more acceptable alternate locations.
* Growth Report: Lois Kemerling said that despite the gloomy six month growth report, her Dry Creek Club has reached positive growth by +1 and encouraged everyone to invite prospective-member-guests. Mike Camelio, Terry Boucher and Jerry Nonko reported that the new Southglenn Club is planned for a January 1, 2012 charter date. The charter fee was sent by the sponsoring club, Littleton and all check-list items have been approved. A charter banquet is planned for 5:30 pm, February 15 at the Southglenn CC Clubhouse. Instead of the usual pot-luck, this event will probably have a planned menu.
* Freedom Week Report: CJ Farr submitted the following report: "Freedom week luncheon is February 21 at Pinehurst country club, 6255 W. Quincy Ave. Sign in from 10:45 to 11:15, with program starting at 11:30. We have 36 schools this year. 35 last year, but added 2 new schools. Club and school paid luncheon reservations are due by Jan 30. We will require all payments in advance this year in order to make sign in more efficient. Greg and I met Saturday, and he has not received any photos for the Sertoma slide show he is going to put together. Please don’t forget to email them to him. [digital photos to gregpmeehan@gmail.com ] I have bad news about the savings bond awards for the winners. You coordinators have all been advised and I am awaiting feedback from a few coordinators. Paper gift bonds are no longer available. The treasury dept. has established a way to order electronic bonds, but for a minor, the parents must first establish a treasury account, and then establish a subordinate account for their minor child. If they then want to allow gift bonds to be purchased the parents must give the giver the child’s treasury account number and social security number. The final deal breaker is bonds are purchased at face value. In case you may not know, in the past bonds were purchased at 50% of face value, so our $100.00 bonds cost us $50.00. I believe it will be the coordinator’s responsibility to finalize our decision. So far we have several who have said we need to provide a $100.00 gift, because of all of our promos saying they will get a $100.00 bond. So far the best ideas I have received suggest we ask the clubs to contribute $50.00 more per school. We give the winners a $100.00 check and the paperwork needed to open a savings account at Young American’s bank. After this year we will need to decide if going forward we just give a $50.00 award. The good news in all of this is we have received two $100.00 donations which will take care of the difference for the District winners $200.00 award. … "
* FDRs: Chuck Kemerling reported no update from annual fund coordinator Holly Walls. He and Karen will be visiting clubs and selling fellow pins throughout the rest of the Sertoma year.
* Soap Box Derby: No report
* Socials: Sertoma Pat reported that the Heritage Square Music Hall event was a huge success. A "Magic Moments" district social event is being planned for March 23. This is a heart-warming show put on by physically/mentally challenged folks. Details to follow.
* Awards: Russ Fuiks submitted the following report: At the President’s Roundtable this week I was asked to explain how to date the Service to Mankind and the Sertoman of the Year award entries, which are due to your District Governor no later than Sunday, July 1, 2012. These two Awards should be dated for the Sertoma year that the award will be presented to the winning recipient. The Regional awards will be presented at the Regional Convention in September, 2012. Therefore, they should be dated for the Sertoma year 2012-2013. The International awards will be presented at the Annual Sertoma Convention in the Spring of 2013. Therefore, they will also be dated for the Sertoma year 2012-2013. A question was asked as to why these awards, which must be written before the start of the 2012-2013 Sertoma year, would take the 2012-2013 date. My best answer is that the Sertoma Manual states that: “The Sertoman of the Year award should be based on the member’s lifetime contributions to Sertoma and the community. The Service to Mankind “presentation of the award should be based on the amount of volunteer community service provided by the individual to the community, state, province, or nation.” In both cases, we are honoring an individual for many years of service to their community, so the presentation year of the award seems appropriate. I was also asked what is happening to the Outstanding Distinguished Secretary award this year. I am referring this question to Bill Hupp and will hopefully have an answer at the February President’s Roundtable.
* Old Business: Norm encouraged all clubs to push Sertoma's 2012 Convention in Kansas City, April 26-28. Just visit: www.sertoma.org/convention
* New Business: The Freedom Week President's Reception for Sertoma President, John Kerr and Regional ID Bill Hupp, is scheduled for the Holiday Inn, 7390 W Hampden Ave, Feb 20 at 7:00 pm. The cost is $18/person. RSVP to Pat Diesing, 303-356-2234 or ptrcdiesi@aol.com by Feb 13.
* Club Report Highlights: - Chatfield (Pat Diesing) has 16 members and 1 freedom week school. A rush party and pizza night fundraiser is planned. - Littleton (Larry Parberry) 38 mbrs and 2 schools. Tried a new meeting location at The Toast Restaurant which was acceptable but not great. Will check-out a few more locations. - Dry Creek (Susan Goodman) 30 mbrs. They also met at the Toast Restaurant and found it okay except for the kitchen noise. Planning a chocolate fundraiser. - Jeffco (CJ Farr) 15 mbrs. Working on Freedom Week events. - Platte Canyon (Bob Haigh) 17 mbrs, 6 schools. - Columbine (Charlene Dame) 10 mbrs, 3 schools. Pancake fundraiser planned - Arapahoe (Ken Kelley) 46 mbrs, 5 schools. Planning to partner with Southwest Sertoma on a Golf Tournament fundraiser. - Greater Park Hill (Greg Anderson) 16 mbrs, 2 schools. Working on the Martin Luther King parade. - SPC (Marty Morgan), 24 mbrs, 2 schools. - Southglenn (Terry Boucher) 22 mbrs. Working on an Easter Basket fundraiser and buying supplies for a future gift wrap project.
Of course much discussion time was spent on the big Bronco/Tebow win over the Steelers, 29-23.
Norm Borchers closed the meeting at 8:00 am. The next Roundtable meeting is scheduled for the Holiday Inn, 7390 W Hampden Ave, Lakewood, CO 80128, at 6:30 pm, Feb 21, 2012.
